Lead Shot

Both shots were on the Canon EOS 7D in manual focus with the EF 50 mm f/1.4 USM . For the day shot , I used my Fader ND Mark II filter ready to its max of 8 check of compactness . ( ISO : 100 , Shutter Speed : 8 second , Aperture : 22 ) . For the night injection , all the same as the solar day scope , minus the ND filter .

So I used ignitor versus dark extended exposure for my diptych , and what better subject thing than the county fair Ferris bicycle ( in that anything that reminds me of summer is win ! ) To get the two persona as close to the same as possible , I setup the tripod for the day snapshot , locking everything in position , then ( do n’t differentiate anyone ) I dug a small hole right under the gist of the tripod so I know where to rate it when I came back later that evening . I also kept everything congeal and locked on the tripod , only fold the legs in , so the angle at which I occupy the video was the same . For both pictures I seek to time it so that I would start the exposure right before they started spinning the wheel so you could make out the actual carts on the ride too . This was plausibly the most unmanageable part of the shot .

[ Ed note : So groovy , and while it may be outside the range of this contest , I ’d have a go at it to see the two images combined in differently determine crops and custom portmanteau word . ]

Shooting Info : Sony A550 , Sony 50 mm F1.8 lens wide clear , ISO-200 , 1/500 sec . , several shots taken 2.5 hours apart on the same mean solar day . Diptych put together in Photoshop . I was looking for a couple of shots that would either contrast or complement one another . With the summer heat bearing down , I sink for the contrast of my married woman enjoying the relative cool of a nearby commons ( right field ) compare with the suffocating heat of the concrete jungle just outside our flat .

Lonely at the Sandwich Shop

Nikon D90 , Lens : 50 mm f/1.8 , ISO : 200 , Exposure : 1/160th sec at f/1.8 . This was taken at Ye Olde Fashioned Ice Cream Shop in Summerville , SC ( good burgers in the south ! ) My daughter was sitting at the replication waiting to get a drinking refill , and I was shooting the classic looking red stools against the blue background and I think she look pretty alone at the heel counter all alone with her Elmo T - Shirt that is pray for attending , so I then pointed the television camera at her . I think the lonesome stool next to my girl captures the theme of loneliness .

I wanted to find a construct or mind that could n’t be captured in just one picture . After thinking for a while , I came up with a wizard hat . It ’s the staring construct for a diptych , but I do n’t feel like I pull it off very well . The photo is presuppose to be of a beleaguered amateur magician who lost his horseshoe in his hat .

[ Ed note : If only there was a tie to the shoe imagery in the first shot , this clever floor would be in full realized . Ahh , now I get it . I was way too slow with that one . ]

Fire and Ice

When I translate the challenge for this week about diptychs , I thought about some of the places that I have lived . I formerly lived in the north where it is oft frigid and now live in the Dixie where it is often very hot . This brought to mind Robert Frost ’s poemFire and Ice . So I made this diptych using some red crumpled tissue paper back lit with a desk lamp for the firing and a opus of glass frozen in my freezer for theice . Then I merged them together and pen this verse form .

I lived in the magnetic north times cold as ice

Then in the south oft blaze away spicy

Camera, Meet Bee

Shot with a Canon 5d Mark II and 100 mm f2.8 macro lens of the eye . shoot full undetermined , 200 iso , with a 1/2000 shutter speed , underexposing the blastoff by a third . I define up my 24 - 105 mm on my friend ’s 7d , and line it up with the pictured peak . My 5d was on a picture tripod for an easy , level cooking pan , such that both the flower and the crystalline lens were in centering . Then , I just waited with my finger poised on the remote shutter for one of the monolithic bee zooming around the garden to get over the focal plane — each fourth dimension one did , I endeavor to seize it . Eventually I have one in focus and where I wanted it , and I just panned the photographic camera over and speedily took the second slam , of the 24 - 105 . Very little photoshopping needed , just make for the picture up to neutral and put the two shots together .

Winner, Traditional Style – Traffic Explosion

Gear : Nikon D90 , 18 - 200 mm VR

setting : 18 mm , 120 2nd photograph / 60 second photograph , f/11 , ISO200

I ’ve always liked long vulnerability shots , particularly of traffic . When I read the challenge for the hebdomad , my first opinion was some pair of photo that sort of had a yin - yang vibe to them . The two slam were taken over I-93 in Manchester , NH . Both were taking facing compass north , so the tail lights are the northward lanes and the headlight are the southward lanes . It start up raining as I was driving to the bridge , so I consider the wet route helped the appearance . In post processing , I reduced the exposure of the southward blastoff and increased the exposure of the northbound stroke to try out to get them closer together . After that , I just cropped them down to something that I thought bet good . When it come to combining them , I played around with putting them side - by - side before I decide to rotate the southbound picture and line them up vertically . It made for a sort of explosion of light .

[ Ed note : There are just so many aspects of this shot that I love . From the indirect romp on the camera ’s position ( through the different colors of headlamp / taillight ) to the aesthetic accosting of one ’s eyes to what could easy be a program line about the scope modern transportation system . Great man . ]

Winner, Avant-Garde Style – Dual Horizon

The television camera is a Pentax K - x , with a 300 millimeter telephoto at 55 mm focal distance , ISO 400 , f11 , 1/100 . I take two photograph of the horizon ( dissimilar directions ) just before a thunder storm came in . I paste the picture together with Keynote and then edited them in iPhoto . I add the Black and White filter and upped the contrast on both . I rotated one so the horizon was on the top .

[ Ed notation : Sorry , I just could n’t decide between winners this hebdomad , specially with the styles of diptych being so diverse . This shot is a lilliputian less traditional , using strict blending / cropping in a manner that believably would n’t hold up in a separate frame . But the issue knead , and I ’d debate that it ’s still a proper diptych . The clouds are enchant , and mixing two lense to skew the horizon adds so much to the complexness of the shot that your eyes never get blase of looking at it . ]

The Odd Phenomenon

Look back through the achiever ’s R-2 , and check out how many photos are red-faced / blue , or variations therefrom . I did n’t comment until I pull my favorite — which I ’d argue I liked for concept , framing and execution as much as color . But apparently , I ’m just as susceptible as anyone else to the ruddy / blue ororange / blue motifwe see in movie posters and video game covers . Keep an eye out for it !
