Have you meet that “ behind the scenes at National Geographic ” photo where those guys are run from a bear ? It ’s pretty amusing . But it ’s afake . Super duper , 100 pct imitation . So where did it follow from ?
After I expose the photo in my latest FAKES round - up , Tim Sparks , a filmmaker in Colorado , contacted me about the image through Twitter . He ’s the whiskery redheaded woodpecker in the photo and says that the moving picture was made back in 2011 . Sparks and the other guy in the photo were doing some location reconnoiter in Salida , Colorado for a movie that never wrap up being raise .
“ All of our admirer and family bed we were out in the wilderness location scouting so we intend it would be funny to create a pic of us bunk from a bear and stake it on Facebook , ” Sparks told me through email . “ A few of us posted it and we all had a good jape with our menage and acquaintance . ”

Below , the original icon before the bear was lend .
After they first posted it toFacebook , it slow but sure as shooting started to spread to other land site . And that ’s when it began to mutate . The legend would morph , sometimes subtly , as so many viral photos tend to do .
Once Reddit got ahold of it , the image could n’t be stopped . It start out record up with headlines like “ Wildlife photography go wrong , ” and “ Behind the scenes of National Geographic . ” Naturally , it acquire meme - ified with versions like “ Godzilla photography gone wrong . ”

So who are the rest of these bozo from ? The bozo on the far rightfield is Nathan Phelps ofWarcell Productions . The man holding the photographic camera in the center field isTeodor Vladimirov , who also happened to be the photoshop wizard who added the bear . Mario Martinezis on the far left over and actorBrandon Smithtook the photo .
As for the bear ? Well , that ’s a stock photo , of course .
The group tried different versions of the shot , but plain they chose the correct one . Because masses ca n’t seem to get enough of their existence . badly , it ’s everywhere . Hey see , it just got posted to Reddit againtoday .

Now that people definitely know the image is a imitation , will it finally pass away a natural death ? Probably not . Never underestimate the internet ’s power to recycle a hoax - yttrium jokefor eternity . In fact , this exposure will likely outlive us all .
