Meet the Sand Shark . Unveiled this week on the sands of Alabama , this fallible puppet is perhaps the best weapon yet against the oily disaster BP has wrought against the Gulf coast . Updated .
Wider than traditional sand combing rigs , BP ’s Sand Shark is perhaps the most effective beach cleaning machine implemented in the combat to save the U.S. fulsome southerly coast . Its digging mechanism is capable of reaching 18 inch below the control surface , but even with that pass some contamination will rest behind .
The one pictured here is the prototype ( demonstrated for the press on Orange Beach , Alabama ) , but within six week an total fleet of these new vehicle will haunt Gulf Coast beaches for tarball prey :

The Sand Shark work by churning up moxie with mandible - similar augers that feed the material onto a conveyor swath . From there the sand is post into a tow - behind auto that is normally used to sieve aggregate like stiff and sand in brick and mortar fabrication . In the sifter the sand tumble through a serial of screens that filter out most everything larger than 2 mm while allowing debris - free Baroness Dudevant to disgorge back onto the beach . – al.com
And even though the Sand Shark is effective , the livid sandy beach that were a staple fibre of sealed Gulf beach may never be the same . As described by al.com , the vegetable oil - stain beach , even after a Sand Shark cleaning , still hold a dampish , oily sense underfoot .
Update : Reader Steve found us a picture of the Sand Shark press conference :

Yeah , this is going to take a long , long clock time . [ al.com ]
