Drakejust snagged the best rap song accolade at the2019 Grammys— and he has something to say.
Taking the stage to accept the award for his song “God’s Plan,” the rapper admitted it was “the first time in Grammys history where I actually am who I thought I was for a second,” humbly adding that he “definitely didn’t think [he] was winning anything” this year.
And alongside his message of gratitude came one of inspiration to those viewers who, like he once was, are children with dreams of working in the business — as well as those musical artists who are already successful because of their contributions, with or without a Grammy.
“I wanted to take this opportunity, while I’m up here, to just talk to all the kids who are watching this who are aspiring to do music, all my peers who make music from their heart, that do things pure and tell the truth,” said Drake, 32.

“I want you to knowwe play in an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport. This is not the NBA where at the end of the year, you’re holding a trophy because you made the right decisions or won the games.”
“This is a business where sometimes it’s up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed-race kid from Canada has to say, or a fly Spanish girl from New York, or anybody else, or a brother from Houston, my brother Travis,” he continued. “You’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word,if you’re a hero in yourhometown… ”

Multiple people took to social media to congratulate the star and stand behind his words — likedAriana Grade, who wrote “Beautifully said@drake,” in a quickly deleted tweet.
Fans of the rapper also came to his defense on Twitter after the show cut him off mid-speech,with one writing, “Don’t try to play it off, disrespectful MFs. That was absolutely low.”

After the broadcast, a rep for the Grammys clarified that producers got confused when Drake paused, thinking he was finished. They invited him back to the stage, but he said he was happy with how he ended his speech, the rep says.
