open everything that squid and hooter have in common , why should n’t they switch position for a while ? That ’s the head that clothes designer John Holbo asks in the beautifully - illustrated tale Squid & Owl , a romp through taxonomy , scientific discipline and retro illustration .
Holbo is a philosophy prof when he is n’t concocting weird narrative of squid , and it indicate . The book starts with his whimsical musings on the scientific names for “ owl ” and “ squid , ” and then dead becomes a meditation on why calamary and bird of night are considered “ binary . ” Why ca n’t they change places ? It ’s a little like reading a strait-laced shaver ’s book and suddenly discovering that in fact you ’re bury knee - trench in an essay on linguistic communication and deconstruction . Which is n’t to say it is n’t entirely fun and silly . I ’ve excerpted a few pages from his Holy Writ , which you may see all of onhis Flickr stream , and purchase a copy of atBlurb .
