Expedit , we barely love ye . Ikea recently announced that the popular shelving system is not long for this world , and the internet react with rage . But there ’s a really honest reason for Ikea to get free of Expedit . And in fact , it ’s not really going away at all .
Ikea says it ’s supersede Expedit with a new line of shelving , call Kallax , beginning in April . The cult over the decision has been swift — specially from vinyl radical collectors , amongst whom Expedit is something of a fad detail . In fact , there ’s even a 20,000 - somebody strongFacebook pagedevoted to save the easy - stackable ledge .
But manducate on this : Ikea uses a banging one percentage of the human beings ’s wood supply . That ’s 17.8 million cubic yard of wood . Much of that goes into making the veneer you chance on many of Ikea ’s most popular product , including Expedit .
Now , let ’s bet at Kallax . Ikea reports that the internal dimensions of the organisation are precisely the same as Expedit — so Kallax will still fit your vinyl aggregation just fine . So what ’s changing ? The thickness of the encompassing outer edge that makes Expedit so classifiable . It seems like a small change to us , but it ’s not . Sales numbers for Expedit are n’t public , but we know that Ikea sell some41 millionsimilar Billy bookcases a year .
If Ikea can trim even a centimeter of Natalie Wood on each of those production , it will save up massively on material costs . It ’s also going to help them make good on their title of sustainability . mightily now , 25 percentage of Ikea wood is certify by the Forest Stewardship Council ( though , as one commenter guide out , the certification was recently thrown into question ) . Last year , theypledged to increasethat number to 50 percent within five old age . And when you ’re selling hundreds of millions of products a year , even the smallest saving count .

So this decision credibly has nothing to do with design , and not much to do with stirring up exhilaration — though that does n’t hurt — either . It ’s just good business at a truly massive scale . So mourn for Expedit — but recollect that it ’s being exchange by basically the same thing , and it ’s coming from a more sustainable company .
