Scientists have made an authoritative find on Comet 67P / Churyumov - Gerasimenko , confirming for the first time that it hold two important building blocks of living : the simple amino group acid genus Glycine , and phosphorous .
The discovery was made by the ROSINA instrument on board ESA ’s Rosetta spacecraft . It suggests that , while cometsmay or may nothave played a part in bring water to Earth , they may have been creditworthy for kickstarting life here . The findings are publish in the journalScience .
“ You would need 10 million comets to supply Earth ’s water , but only a few hundred to provide the organic material , ” the field of study ’s jumper cable writer , Kathrin Altwegg from the University of Bern , told IFLScience . “ It ’s not proof they started life on Earth , but certainly if you start from aminic acids , you could make life history . And we know that comets impacted Earth . ”

To make the finding , ROSINA detect and sorted gas molecules in the comet ’s comatoseness when Rosetta made its close approach in August 2015 . This is not technically the first time that glycine has been feel in cometary material ; that honor is reserved for NASA’sStardust mission , which bring back sample from Comet Wild 2 to Earth in 2006 . However , scientists were unsure if those samples had been contaminated by globe - establish material , so they could n’t be sure of the find .
Now with this latest determination , we bonk that comet do contain glycine , which is a biologically important constituent compound found in proteins . Phosphorous , meanwhile , is a fundamental element that plays a major function in the geomorphologic framework of RNA and DNA .

“ This shows that comet had the potential to deliver organic - productive material throughout the Solar System , in particular globe , ” Rosetta project scientist Matt Taylor , who was not directly demand in the study , tell IFLScience . “ The compounding of such a delivery with a water - rich surround like Earth then provides the next step to the organization of life itself . ”
Other constitutive compoundshave been detectedon comet 67P , but this late finding is a new breakthrough . We still do n’t know for sure how lifespan began on Earth , and the theory it had a helping handwriting from comets is a tantalizing one . It also has conditional relation for finding life on other worlds ; if comet played a part here , could they have done the same elsewhere ?
“ What could have happened to Earth could have encounter everywhere , ” said Altwegg .
