Robert Pattinsonis revealing one of his deepest, darkest fears: humiliation.
The Batmanactor, 37, said during a chat with writer and comedian Jordan Firstman forInterviewmagazinewhy he’s “not really” ever had to do a project he was not at all into. It’s because he doesn’t want to look bad.
“I have a deep, deep fear of humiliation,” Pattinson admitted, explaining: “And also, you sort of know it’s down to you. You can say it’s a sh—- script or the director’s a d— or blah, blah, blah, but at the end of the day, no one’s going to care about the reasons.”
“You’re the one who everyone’s going to say is lame,” he continued. “And the vast majority of people will say you’re lame even when you tried your best.”
Pattinson, who made hisfilm debutat the age of 17 inVanity Fair, also discussed the way he sees his own “place in society,” and alluded to the difficult job-to-job aspect of being a Hollywood actor.

“I’m constantly thinking that you’re just going to spend the vast majority of your life unemployed and desperate and kind of feeling like you’re a total failure. I think that’s just what life is,” he said with a laugh.
Firstman noted that while “show business” people often have “this never-being-enough syndrome,” there are “some people who are content," to which Pattinson replied, “I don’t know.”
“I feel like you’re specifically at a maximum most of the time you’re doing a job and you’re employed for three months,” he explained. “That’s the most stressful thing in the world.”
While he noted that he hasn’t had any problems with his own body image, he admitted the expectations for men and women in show business are “crazy” and that he’s fallen into the pattern of “addictive” dieting.

“I once ate nothing but potatoes for two weeks, as a detox,” he said. “Just boiled potatoes and Himalayan pink salt. Apparently it’s a cleanse… you definitely lose weight.”
He added, “I have basically tried every fad you can think of, everything except consistency.”
Pattinson also touched on a reluctance to discuss his training routine for movies, saying that it’s “quite embarrassing when you get into a pattern of answering questions about your workout because there’ll always be a guy who’s in better shape than you.”
